Q&A with Mackoy Customer Care Manager Beverley Bell

By her own admission our Customer Care Manager Beverley Bell is a woman who enjoys a challenge. She's backpacked around Australia, worked on cruise ships and even skydived in New Zealand. But for the last 11 years Beverley's turned her many skills to the construction sector. Joining Mackoy groundworks & civil engineering just 10 months ago to fill the role of Customer Care Manager at our Hampshire head office.

When she's not overseeing our customer care operatives in the office Beverley likes to make the most of her free time by cycling, hiking, playing racket ball or taking part in a gym class. Despite her hectic schedule we managed to sit her down for just a few minutes so we could quiz her about what it's like to head up Mackoy's customer care team, and also what appealed to her about working in groundworks and civil engineering.

Describe what a typical workday is like for you at Mackoy…

Once all the good mornings to everyone are done, and a cup of tea is made, I then check to make sure my customer care operatives are in and on their way to their allocated jobs. I have two teams that go out to customer houses and deal with any defects. Next I check my emails for any new jobs and book appointments with customers. Our programme of works is updated on a daily basis and weekly reports come in from all of our clients, which I update and return. It's also our team's responsibility to update spreadsheets when customer care invoices are paid and also send out any invoices to Mackoy clients. As well as pay visits to properties for inspections or issues when required.

Wow! That's a busy day! What would you say is the most rewarding part of your role and why?

I enjoy the everyday challenges the job brings, especially the problem solving aspect, and I love that I have a great degree of control and freedom within my role. Working with a team that are used to working on their own has been challenging but definitely rewarding. It's great to be able to improve and support them and establish that great working relationship within the customer care team. Every day at Mackoy is different.

What appealed to you about working in the groundworks industry?

I’ve worked in the construction industry for over 11 years but mainly in refurbishment works which I enjoyed so now groundworks for me is something new and it has a different range of challenges. There’s also a sense of satisfaction when you start to understand the way it works from start to finish and how you're a part of that.

Tell us three interesting facts about yourself…

1. I did a tandem skydive in New Zealand.
2. I backpacked in Australia for 6 months.
3. I swam with dolphins in Hawaii.

Who's your biggest role model in life and why?

My dad is my role model because having lost my mum at such a young age, and how he brought up seven of us aged between 4 and 15, alongside running a business was amazing. He also taught me to be honest, hardworking, true to yourself, and to never stop learning.

What one thing in life are you most proud of and why?

Having the opportunity to travel the world while working on cruise ships. The work was hard but a great experience that will live with me forever. I’m proud that I was one of hundreds chosen for this great job.

What's your favourite thing about working at Mackoy?

I enjoy working for Mackoy because it’s a growing business and I love the idea of growing with it. The challenges and the opportunity they have given me to make a difference, to prove they made the right decision in choosing me to work for them, are a great motivator. Plus I work with great people and I enjoy gaining new knowledge as the business grows.
